How technology recruiting works

Internships are the main route into a full-time tech job. NVIDIA calls its internships its primary pipeline for new-graduate hiring, and career offices expect the largest companies to hire interns with the goal of converting them to full-time.7,1

The usual sequence is an application, an online coding assessment, then technical and behavioral interviews. Amazon's student process runs from application to online assessment to virtual interviews, with a result within five business days of the interview; its intern assessment takes about 90 minutes, most of it coding.11,12

Some companies hire first and match you to a team afterward. Microsoft considers candidates for every team hiring that role in its first round and settles the team after the final round, and Amazon places interns by business need with a manager and a mentor.9,16

Timing differs by kind of company. The largest tech companies open earliest, startups tend to hire closer to when they need someone, and semiconductor companies such as Micron run calendars of their own.1,2,23

The main roles

Software engineering

Design, build and test the applications and systems people use.24

BLS describes software developers as designing computer applications and programs, and most start with a bachelor's degree.24

Internship postings ask for fundamentals more than credentials. Amazon's summer 2027 software internship asks for enrollment in computer science or a related STEM degree, one general-purpose programming language, and experience implementing data structures and basic algorithms.16

Data science and machine learning

Collect and analyze data, build models, and turn findings into decisions.25

BLS describes data scientists as using analytical tools to extract insights from data, from collecting it to building and validating models and presenting what they find.25

Interviews differ from software engineering ones, and career offices note that data science roles use their own technical assessments. Machine learning reaches software interviews too: Amazon lists framing a problem as a machine learning problem among its interview topics.1,13

Product management

Guide a product from idea to launch, connecting the technical and business sides.18

Associate product manager programs are the structured way in. Google's APM internship is for students entering their penultimate year and looks for experience such as a software or product internship, technical presentations, or leading an entrepreneurial project.18

The windows are short. Google's summer 2027 APM internship took applications from September 22 to October 6, 2026, and its new-grad APM program used the same two weeks.18,19

Hardware and semiconductors

Design and test chips, circuits and computer hardware.26

BLS describes computer hardware engineers as researching, designing, developing and testing computer systems and components, usually with a degree in computer engineering or a related field such as electrical engineering.26

Semiconductor companies hire across many kinds of roles. Texas Instruments lists analog and digital chip design, applications, test and validation, systems and technical sales among its student roles.22

Their calendars run long. Micron's internships run from May to August; most of its postings go up in late August, and most roles are filled by the end of January.23

Business roles at tech companies

Sales, marketing, finance and operations inside a technology company.

Not every tech internship is technical. Google's business internship places students in sales, marketing and finance for twelve weeks, and Texas Instruments lists business, operations, IT, HR and marketing tracks.21,22

What matters and how to prepare

  • Data structures and algorithms

Software engineering interviews center on data structures and algorithms. Amazon's topic list adds object-oriented design, databases, distributed systems and operating systems, and asks candidates to know the runtime and memory use of common data structures.1,13

  • Practice without your editor

Amazon recommends practicing coding outside an integrated development environment. Meta suggests a recent data structures and algorithms course, or equivalent practice on your own.13,17

  • Behavioral stories in the STAR format

Amazon's behavioral interviews are built on its Leadership Principles, with no brain teasers, and it recommends answering in the STAR format: the situation, the task, the action you took and the result.14,15

  • Projects you can show

Career offices advise putting your own projects on GitHub. In a CodePath survey of engineering leaders reported by Fortune, side projects and portfolios ranked above degrees and school prestige.2,27

  • A résumé and a transcript

Google's internship and APM applications ask for an updated résumé and a transcript, and say no cover letter is needed.18

Strategy and common mistakes

Strategy

  • Apply the week a posting opens

Rolling postings can fill before they come down, so career offices advise applying the week you find a role rather than waiting.6

  • Talk while you code

Meta's advice for its internship interviews is to explain your thinking to the interviewer as you code, and to use the language you are most comfortable with.17

  • When stuck, start simple

Start with a brute-force solution and improve it. Meta notes that a hint from the interviewer is not a bad sign.17

  • Use referrals well

Career offices say a referral helps most when the person knows you well and can speak to your technical skills.1

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for spring at the largest companies

Their programs recruit in the fall, and many aim to finish before Thanksgiving. Spring suits smaller companies and startups better.4,1

  • Stalling on one question in an assessment

Amazon advises moving on from a question you are stuck on and coming back to it, rather than spending the clock on one problem.12

  • Reading silence as a pending answer

Decisions take time: Microsoft says to allow up to 90 days and cannot speed up a review for a competing offer deadline, and Google says three months without a reply usually means it chose other candidates.9,20

  • Underestimating the competition

Handshake data reported by CNBC put technology internships at the most applications per posting of any sector in 2024 to 2025. Plan to apply widely.28

Your plan by class year

  1. First-year

Several large companies run programs for students at the start of college. Microsoft's Explore is a twelve-week US summer internship for first- and second-year students who have taken an introductory computer science course and one semester of calculus. NVIDIA's Ignite is a twelve-week pre-internship for freshmen and sophomores.8,7

Microsoft also runs Discovery, a four-week program for students about to start their first year of college.9

    What to do this year

    • Apply to first- and second-year programs

Microsoft's careers site describes Explore for first- and second-year students, and NVIDIA lists Ignite for freshmen and sophomores. Check each company's student page in the fall and apply when a posting appears.8,7

    • Take the courses the postings ask for

Explore asks for an introductory computer science course and a semester of calculus, and later internship postings such as Amazon's ask for experience with data structures and basic algorithms. Take those courses early.8,16

    • Build something you can show

A small app, a tool or a data analysis you can link to gives a recruiter something concrete while your coursework is still introductory. Career offices advise putting your own projects on GitHub.2

    • Ask smaller companies and labs for work

Startups, local businesses and faculty research labs may have no formal program, which leaves room to ask directly for part-time or summer work. NSF's Research Experiences for Undergraduates program also funds paid summer research, and you apply to each site directly.10

  2. Sophomore

Explore and Ignite are open to sophomores as well, and career offices encourage students to have an internship by their second year.8,7,5

These programs keep their own schedules. Microsoft takes Explore applications on an ongoing basis until positions are filled, so apply when a posting appears rather than waiting for a deadline.8

    What to do this year

    • Apply to sophomore-eligible programs

Explore and Ignite both take second-year students, so apply again this year if you missed them as a first-year.8,7

    • Find a summer role anywhere

A startup, a research lab or a smaller local company is real experience, and a technical summer of any kind strengthens next fall's applications. NSF's REU sites pay stipends for summer research and often help with housing and travel.5,10

    • Start interview practice now

Work through data structures and algorithms problems without an editor, as Amazon recommends, so you are ready when junior-fall applications open.13

  3. Junior

Junior fall is the main season. Career offices say the largest tech companies open summer applications in late summer and early fall, and some windows close within weeks: Google's hardware and business internships for summer 2027 asked for applications by early October 2026.1,20,21

Large structured programs can finish early. One career center notes that many of them aim to hire all their summer interns before Thanksgiving.4

Spring is a second season, especially at smaller companies and startups, which tend to hire closer to when they need someone.3,2

    What to do this year

    • Apply the week postings open

The large programs open in late summer and early fall, and many aim to finish hiring before Thanksgiving, so apply the week a posting goes up.1,4,6

    • Prepare for the online assessment

Expect a timed coding assessment before any interview. Amazon's intern assessment takes about 90 minutes, most of it coding, and Amazon advises moving past a question you are stuck on.12

    • Keep applying into the spring

Smaller companies and startups hire closer to when they need someone, so a fall without an offer is the start of a second season.3,2

  4. Senior and new grad

Internships are for students returning to school. Amazon's summer 2027 internship requires at least one term remaining afterward.16

One career office's 2026 to 2027 guide puts full-time hiring at large tech companies from July to December, and new-grad programs such as Google's APM can open in the fall. A return offer from your internship remains the most direct route.2,19,7

    What to do this year

    • Ask how return offers work

NVIDIA calls its internships its primary pipeline for new-graduate hiring. If you interned, ask your manager or recruiter how and when return offers are decided.7

    • Apply to new-grad roles in the fall

Apply to full-time roles from the start of senior year, and watch for structured new-grad programs such as Google's APM, which take applications in the fall.2,19

    • Keep applications moving while you wait

Decisions can be slow: Microsoft asks candidates to allow up to 90 days. Keep other applications going until you hold an offer you want.9
