How consulting recruiting works
Consulting hires through structured internships and the case interview, and the largest firms now close internship applications more than a year before the summer they fill. This guide covers the main kinds of firm, how to prepare, a plan for each class year, and what Upwind's catalog shows right now.2,1

How consulting recruiting works
Consulting firms hire undergraduates into analyst roles, and the summer internship is the main way in. McKinsey's business analyst interns work on client teams for eight to ten weeks, and Bain says a strong summer can lead to a full-time offer.4,12
The process has a recognizable shape. You apply, often with an online assessment such as McKinsey's Solve game or BCG's online case. Then come interviews that mix a case, in which you work through a business problem aloud, with behavioral questions about your own experience.6,9,13,5
Firms differ in size and in timing. The largest strategy firms, often called MBB (McKinsey, BCG and Bain), and the Big Four professional-services firms (Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC) are the best known. Other strategy firms often follow a similar calendar with somewhat later deadlines, and boutique firms tend to recruit later still, sometimes on a rolling or off-cycle basis.1
Firms also run short programs for younger students. Bain lists exploratory programs of a week or less, including two aimed at sophomores, and Accenture runs a two-day virtual externship for first-years.16,17,28
The main roles
Strategy and management consulting
Advise organizations on how to run better: strategy, operations, growth and efficiency.39
BLS describes management analysts, often called management consultants, as recommending ways to improve an organization's efficiency, and a bachelor's degree is the typical way in.39
Beyond MBB, firms such as Oliver Wyman, L.E.K. and Alvarez & Marsal run similar programs. L.E.K.'s undergraduate summer associates spend eight to ten weeks on casework after a week of training.1,21
You do not need a business major. Bain says no business background is required, and Fortune reported McKinsey widening its search toward liberal arts majors.15,40
Big Four advisory and consulting
The advisory and consulting arms of Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC, built on top of their accounting practices.3
The Big Four recruit by service line, and the interviews follow. At PwC, most advisory roles require a case interview, while audit and tax candidates typically have behavioral and scenario-based interviews instead.22,26
Windows can be short. EY lists its consulting application window as two weeks in September, with its accounting and tax windows closing later.23
The accounting tracks recruit especially early and are tied to the CPA: by the fall of 2026, Deloitte and KPMG were already posting summer 2028 tax and audit internships for students meeting CPA education requirements.27,25
Most Big Four roles are filled on a rolling basis, and locations close as offers are accepted, so applying early matters more than the posted deadline.22,24
Technology consulting
Help clients plan, build and run the technology behind their business.
Accenture's advisory summer analyst internship runs about ten weeks from June and accepts any major. Its programs are staged by class year: a virtual externship for first-years, a case competition and a leadership program for second-years, and the summer analyst internship for third-years.29,28
Government and public-sector consulting
Consulting for government agencies, often with citizenship and security requirements.
Booz Allen's Summer Games is a ten-week, project-based internship for rising juniors and seniors in STEM, with applications opening in the fall for the following summer. Its other internships are open to all disciplines.30
Read the requirements line. Booz Allen's summer 2027 contracts internship requires US citizenship, and its cyber internship asks for the ability to obtain a Secret clearance.31,32
Economic consulting
Research and quantitative analysis for litigation and regulatory cases, including preparing experts to testify.34
Economic consulting firms run their own calendars. Analysis Group's summer analyst internship is for rising seniors and runs ten to twelve weeks, and Cornerstone Research set its 2026 summer analyst deadline in late September.33,35
Expect to send more than a résumé. Cornerstone asks for a cover letter, a résumé and a transcript.36
Engineering consulting
Civil, environmental and transportation design firms that hire engineering students.
These firms hire much as engineering employers do. Kimley-Horn takes interns year-round, including co-ops, names fall and spring as its peak hiring seasons, and says 85% of its interns received return offers over the last four years.37,38
Licensing shapes the path: entry-level engineering roles at Kimley-Horn require passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and a degree from an accredited program.38
What matters and how to prepare
Learn the case interview
In a case, you are handed a realistic business problem and walk the interviewer through how you would solve it. BCG notes there is often no single right answer; your approach and reasoning carry the weight.11
Practice with the firms' own material
McKinsey publishes practice cases with suggested answers, Oliver Wyman posts practice cases of its own, and Bain and BCG publish case-preparation guides.5,20,14,11
Prepare the behavioral half
McKinsey's personal experience interview asks for examples of your impact, focused on your own role and the actions you took. BCG warns that its behavioral portion is easy to forget while preparing for cases.5,10
Know the assessment
McKinsey's Solve is a game-based problem-solving assessment, and McKinsey says there is no need to prepare for it. BCG's online assessment takes about half an hour and must be finished within 48 hours.6,9
Know the AI rules
Firms separate preparing with AI from using it in the process. McKinsey encourages AI for polishing a résumé or practicing, but not for real-time answers or assessments, and PwC prohibits AI during its assessment and interviews.5,22
A résumé that shows impact
McKinsey advises explaining what you did and why it mattered, quantifying results, and including part-time jobs. Most of its roles do not ask for a cover letter.8,7
Strategy and common mistakes
Strategy
Apply as soon as you are ready
Many firms review applications as they arrive, so career offices advise submitting as soon as you are prepared rather than waiting for the deadline.1,2
Practice out loud, with other people
Bain suggests starting early, practicing out loud with peers rather than only close friends, and favoring quality of practice over quantity.15
In the room, think aloud
Bain's own interview advice: clarify the objective, structure your thinking, share your reasoning and calculations as you go, and adapt to the interviewer's cues.14
Follow firms before they post
Go to information sessions and coffee chats before applications open, and set alerts on firms' own career pages, since some post only there.2,1
Common mistakes
Forcing a memorized framework
Bain names it as a common mistake: fitting a pre-learned framework onto a case instead of building a structure for the problem in front of you.15
Cramming the case
Case interviews reward practice over weeks. Career offices are blunt that it is not a test you can cram for the night before.3
Rushing or going silent
BCG's list of what not to do in a case includes panicking, rushing, overcomplicating, ignoring feedback, staying silent and interrupting.11
Applying to everything at one firm
Some firms cap applications. EY asks candidates to apply to no more than two jobs in six months, so choose the role that fits.23
Your plan by class year
First-year
Explore, and look for the short programs. Accenture, for example, runs a two-day virtual externship for first-years.28
Start learning what a case interview asks of you. Career offices advise preparing before applications open, because case skill builds over time and cannot be crammed.2,3
What to do this year
Apply to first-year programs
Accenture's Elevate to Innovate is a two-day virtual externship for first-year students at four-year schools in the US and Canada. A program this short is an inexpensive way to see how a firm works and to meet the people who recruit for it.28
Start practicing cases early
Read a few practice cases and try one aloud with a friend. McKinsey and Oliver Wyman publish practice cases of their own, and case skill builds over time.5,20,3
Ask smaller local firms for project work
Small consulting practices, local accounting firms and nonprofits may have no formal program at all, which leaves room to ask directly. A specific offer, such as building a spreadsheet model or researching a market, is easier to say yes to than a general request for an internship.
Sophomore
Sophomores have programs of their own. Bain's Building Entrepreneurial Leaders and First Forward programs are aimed at sophomores, with applications open from mid-October to the end of November in 2026.17,18
Sophomore spring is also when the largest firms open internship applications for the summer after junior year. MBB and other large firms open applications from early spring to August for positions that start the following summer, and in the summer 2027 cycle internship deadlines fell around late March. McKinsey's business analyst internship deadline was March 29, 2026.2,1
What to do this year
Apply to sophomore programs
Bain's two sophomore programs close at the end of November. Accenture also runs the Innovation Challenge, a case competition, and a semester-long Student Leadership Program, both for second-year students at four-year schools in the US and Canada.17,18,28
Get on the firms' lists before applications open
Connect with McKinsey is a sign-up for undergraduates in North America recruiting for internships and full-time roles that start in 2028. It brings event invitations, application launch dates and priority access to the Solve assessment.19
Turn a local project into a story
If no program takes you, a part-time job or a defined project for a small business or nonprofit gives you the kind of example McKinsey's personal experience interview asks for: your own role, the actions you took and the impact they had.5
Be case-ready by the spring
In the last cycle, the largest firms' internship deadlines fell in the spring of sophomore year, so have a résumé ready and keep practicing cases with a partner through the winter.1
Junior
If you are a junior reading this in the fall, the largest firms' internship deadlines for next summer have mostly passed: in the summer 2027 cycle, BCG's closed in June 2026 and Bain's second deadline was the end of August.1
The fall is still busy. Other strategy firms often run deadlines into October or November, boutique firms open applications from September to December, economic consulting firms set fall deadlines, and Big Four and technology consulting programs fill on a rolling basis.1,2,35,22,29
Timelines moved one to two months earlier in the summer 2027 cycle, so check each firm's own page rather than last year's calendar.1
What to do this year
Apply to the firms still open this fall
Focus on other strategy firms, boutiques, economic consulting and the Big Four, which recruit later or fill on a rolling basis, and apply as soon as you are ready.1,22
Treat this summer's internship as your interview
Bain and KPMG both describe their internships as a route to a full-time offer, so the work you do this summer is the main evidence a firm will weigh.12,24
Keep practicing for the full-time cycle
The largest firms' full-time deadlines fall in the summer before senior year, so case practice you keep up now carries straight into that cycle.1
Senior and new grad
Full-time deadlines at the largest firms fall in the summer before senior year. For students graduating in 2026 and 2027, McKinsey's full-time business analyst deadline was August 11, 2026 and BCG's was July 7, 2026.1
An internship is the strongest route to a full-time offer: Bain and KPMG both describe their internships that way. Economic consulting runs a longer season, and Analysis Group recruits for full-time roles from September to March.12,24,33
What to do this year
Settle the return offer first
If you interned, ask early how your firm handles return offers and when it needs your answer, before you commit time to other processes.
Look past the largest firms
A fall without an offer still leaves options: other strategy firms and boutiques recruit later than the largest firms, and Analysis Group hires for full-time roles from September to March.1,33
Keep the case sharp
Keep practicing cases out loud with peers, as Bain advises, and use the firms' own practice material between interviews.15,5
What Upwind’s catalog shows
These figures come from a read of Upwind’s catalog on October 3, 2026. 9% of consulting listings state a deadline between October 2026 and March 2027; the rest don't state a deadline, say applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, or name a later date. November 2026 holds more of those deadlines than any other month: 33% of them.
When stated deadlines fall
Share of listings with a stated deadline between October 2026 and March 2027, by month.
| Month | Bar | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Oct | 28% | |
| Nov | 33% | |
| Dec | 31% | |
| Jan | 1% | |
| Feb | 4% | |
| Mar | 4% |
Upwind's catalog files more than management consulting under this field. Its largest consulting employers include engineering design firms and accounting and advisory firms, which is why the employers below are not the best-known strategy names.
The timing differs too. The largest strategy firms' internship deadlines fell in the spring and summer, before this chart begins, so what it shows is the fall part of the season: boutiques, the Big Four, and economic and engineering consulting.1,2
