How media and entertainment recruiting works

Media hiring runs at two speeds: large publishers and newsroom programs close their summer windows in the fall, while much of the field hires as needed, close to the start date. This guide covers the main roles, how to prepare, a plan for each class year, and what Upwind's catalog shows right now.12,13,23

How media and entertainment recruiting works

Much of the field hires as needed. Career offices note that media organizations, from publishers and newsrooms to entertainment companies and labels, often hire on an as-needed basis, and that journalism and publishing employers don't generally recruit on campus, partly because so much of the work is freelance.23,27

The large companies run structured, paid programs. Warner Bros. Discovery pays all of its early-career hires and runs US internships in fall, spring and summer, in areas from news and production to marketing, publicity, finance and legal. Disney's internships span its corporate, entertainment, experiences and ESPN businesses.1,5

Full-time hiring is late and quick. Career offices note that most post-graduate media positions are filled well into the spring, often within a month of the start date, and describe internship recruiting as the best path to a full-time role.23,24

Pipeline programs open doors for students without industry contacts. The T. Howard Foundation places students in paid internships with media, entertainment and technology partners, and the Emma Bowen Foundation matches fellows to partner companies as their hiring needs arise.15,16

The main roles

Journalism

Report, write, edit and produce news in print, digital, audio and video.17

Reporters typically need a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related field, and BLS notes that employers prefer candidates who have worked on a college newspaper, radio or TV station, or in an internship. BLS projects employment of news analysts, reporters and journalists to decline 6% from 2025 to 2035.17

Newsroom internships cover more than reporting: the Dow Jones News Fund's tracks include audience engagement, business reporting, data journalism, digital media and multiplatform editing.13

Book and magazine publishing

Acquire, edit, produce and market books and magazines.

Entry roles include assistant to a literary agent, editorial assistant, assistant editor and publicity assistant, along with support roles in marketing, production and sales.27

Many editors start as editorial assistants, writers or reporters, and BLS notes that work on college publications is a common first step.19

Film, television and streaming

Develop, produce and distribute shows and films.18

BLS notes that producers and directors in film or television may start as assistants or in other low-profile studio jobs, and that film and video editors typically need a bachelor's degree in a film or broadcasting field.18,21

Streaming companies hire across functions. Netflix's internships are typically 12-week summer programs, mostly in engineering and data, with others in content, finance and strategy, and marketing.9

Music

Find artists, release and market their music, and manage the rights.10

Labels hire well beyond the creative side. Universal Music Group lists more than 30 areas for interns, including A&R, analytics, finance, marketing, royalties and sync licensing.10

Public relations and communications

Shape how an organization or client is covered and seen.20

PR specialists typically need a bachelor's degree in public relations or another communications field, and BLS notes that internships at PR firms may help.20

Large advertising and PR agencies recruit early in the academic year, with some application deadlines between September and November.23

What matters and how to prepare

  • Clips and a portfolio

Journalism employers expect clips, and creative fields may ask for a portfolio or book of your best work, or a website that serves as one.27,26

  • Work samples and tests

Newsroom programs ask for more than a résumé: the Dow Jones News Fund asks for a transcript, a 500-word essay and several work samples, plus a timed test.14

  • More than one skill

Career offices say versatility, such as writing well and using editing software, is favored in entry-level jobs.26

  • Know each program's GPA rule

Where a program states one, it is set by that employer or program: Warner Bros. Discovery asks for a 3.0 and the T. Howard Foundation a 2.8.1,15

  • Check location and work authorization

Warner Bros. Discovery requires US work authorization without sponsorship, and some programs, such as FOX Sports', ask you to arrange your own housing and transportation.1,8

Strategy and common mistakes

Strategy

  • Check postings often

Disney posts internships at the start of the fall and spring semesters, and the postings are often up for less than one week. Career offices advise looking often and regularly.6,25

  • Start small in journalism

For a first or second print journalism internship, career offices advise thinking small, since many larger papers and prominent magazines look for at least two previous internships.27

  • Network early

Career offices call networking imperative for creative jobs and suggest reaching alumni through LinkedIn.25

  • Consider a local market

There is value in starting in a local market or a smaller production company and working up from there.26

Common mistakes

  • Waiting until spring for publishing

The large publishers' summer windows can close in early October, and one lasted a single week.12,22

  • Applying only to the biggest outlets

Larger papers and magazines often look for prior internships, so a smaller outlet is a sensible first step.27

  • Answering a fake offer

Paramount says it never asks for a Social Security number or bank details when you apply. Treat any request for them as a likely scam.4

Your plan by class year

  1. First-year

Few formal internships take first-years. Exceptions include the Emma Bowen Foundation, which accepts students from their first year and reviews applications from September through April, and the Disney College Program, which places students in operational roles after one completed term.16,7

Join a campus newspaper, radio or TV station: BLS notes that employers look for that experience.17

    What to do this year

    • Work for campus media

Write, edit or produce for a campus newspaper, radio or TV station. BLS notes that employers prefer reporters with that experience, and that work on college publications is a common first step for editors.17,19

    • Apply to the Emma Bowen Foundation

Its fellows program takes students enrolled at, or accepted to, a four-year college, asks for a 3.0 GPA, and reviews applications from September through April as partner companies request interns.16

    • Ask a smaller local outlet for work

For a first or second internship, career offices advise thinking small, since larger papers and magazines often look for prior internships. A local paper, station or production company is a reasonable place to ask for freelance or part-time work.27,26

    • Keep your work in one place

Journalism employers expect clips, and creative fields may ask for a portfolio or a website that serves as one, so save everything you publish or produce from the start.27,26

  2. Sophomore

Sophomore standing is a common floor. FOX Sports' summer program and Sony Music's internships require it, and the T. Howard Foundation asks for 30 completed credit hours. The Dow Jones News Fund takes sophomores through graduate students, with a summer 2027 deadline of November 11, 2026.8,11,15,13

Warner Bros. Discovery's US summer internships are for rising juniors and up, so sophomores can apply in its January to February window.1

    What to do this year

    • Apply to programs that start at sophomore year

The T. Howard Foundation's early deadline for summer 2027 is October 31, 2026, and it asks for 30 completed credit hours by December 1. The Dow Jones News Fund's deadline is November 11, 2026.15,13

    • Count every internship toward the next

Many larger papers and prominent magazines look for at least two previous internships, so a summer at a smaller outlet now is preparation for a larger one later.27

    • Reach out to people in the field

Career offices call networking imperative for creative jobs and suggest reaching alumni through LinkedIn. A short note asking how someone got their first job is a reasonable start.25

  3. Junior

Publishing has some of the earliest windows. Penguin Random House took summer 2027 applications only from September 28 to October 2, 2026, and HarperCollins took 2027 applications from September 18 to October 1, 2026, for rising seniors and recent graduates.12,22

Others run later. NBCUniversal's summer applications typically open in November, the T. Howard Foundation's final deadline is December 1, 2026, and FOX Sports' summer 2027 deadline is January 10, 2027. Netflix posts on a rolling basis from late summer into the spring.2,15,8,9

    What to do this year

    • Be ready for publishing's early windows

Penguin Random House's summer 2027 window lasted one week, from September 28 to October 2, 2026, so have a résumé, cover letter and samples ready before the fall term.12

    • Apply to studio and newsroom programs through the winter

NBCUniversal's summer applications typically open in November and FOX Sports' summer 2027 deadline is January 10, 2027, so keep a list of windows past the fall.2,8

    • Check postings every week

Disney posts internships at the start of the fall and spring semesters, and the postings are often up for less than a week.6

    • Treat this summer's internship as your interview

Career offices describe internship recruiting as the best path to a full-time media role, so treat the summer as a long audition.23,24

  4. Senior and new grad

Full-time media hiring runs late. Most post-graduate positions are filled well into the spring, often within a month of the start date, so keep applying through graduation and after.23

Check whether an internship takes graduates. HarperCollins accepts recent graduates and candidates with up to a year of work experience, while Paramount hires only currently enrolled students as interns.22,4

    What to do this year

    • Tell your internship team you are looking

With internships the main path to a full-time media role, let your supervisors know before the summer ends that you want to come back, and ask whom to stay in touch with.23,24

    • Look at programs built for new graduates

NBCUniversal's Page Program is a 12- to 16-month role for people who have finished a bachelor's degree, with three four-month assignments in New York or Universal City. It hires three cohorts a year.3

    • Keep applying after graduation

Most post-graduate media positions are filled well into the spring, often within a month of the start date, so a search that runs past graduation is normal.23
