How consumer goods recruiting works

Internships are the main way in. P&G says 70 to 80% of its US interns receive full-time offers each year, PepsiCo says more than half of its interns in the US and Canada convert to full-time jobs, and L'Oréal calls its summer internship the main pathway into its management trainee programs.1,10,12

Return offers depend on the summer. Mondelēz evaluates every intern on performance before deciding on a full-time offer, and L'Oréal says almost all of its management trainees worked with it before, as interns, co-ops or competitors in its Brandstorm innovation competition.13,12

Hiring processes are standardized. P&G uses the same four steps for interns and graduates: an application, online assessments, interviews and an offer. Mars lists a recruiter conversation, a manager conversation and a panel before an offer.2,16

The main roles

Brand management and marketing

Run a brand as a business, from consumer research to advertising and pricing.5

Practice differs by company. P&G hires undergraduates directly as brand managers and describes the job as end-to-end ownership of a business, while Mondelēz's US early-careers program lists brand management only for MBA students.5,6,13

BLS notes that advertising, promotions and marketing managers typically come up through related work, such as sales or market research.19

Sales and customer teams

Manage the relationship with the retailers that stock the products.4

P&G's entry sales roles include sales account executive and category manager, and it notes that the jobs can involve a lot of travel. It looks for achievement-oriented people with demonstrated leadership.4

Some employers hire field sales directly: Mondelēz's undergraduate program includes field sales representative roles.13

Supply chain and manufacturing

Make the products and move them to retailers.22

Logisticians typically need a bachelor's degree, and BLS notes that manufacturing employs more of them than any other industry.22

Mondelēz's undergraduate roles include manufacturing, packaging, procurement, and customer service and logistics.13

Research and development

Develop and test formulas, foods and packaging.15

Kenvue's 2027 R&D internship recruits from engineering fields such as chemical, packaging and materials, and from sciences such as chemistry, microbiology, food science and pharmacy. Interns run lab tests and work on formulas.15

Food scientists need at least a bachelor's degree, and BLS notes that food manufacturing employs more agricultural and food scientists than any other industry.21

Consumer insights and finance

Study what consumers buy, and run the numbers behind the brands.20

Market research analysts study consumer preferences to estimate how well a product will sell, and typically need a bachelor's degree.20

P&G's internships include finance and IT alongside marketing, and P&G says applicants don't need a particular major or prior experience.1

What matters and how to prepare

  • Stories in the STAR format

P&G says it looks for ownership, adaptability, learning agility, resilience and teamwork, and advises answering interview questions with the situation, the task, the action you took and the result.9

  • Plan for the online assessments

P&G's assessments take about 20 to 60 minutes, and a candidate who does not pass can try again after 12 months. P&G suggests a quiet place and a laptop rather than a phone.2,9

  • Numbers on the résumé

P&G advises tailoring the résumé to the role and showing your impact with numbers and results.9

  • Know each program's GPA rule

Where a program states one, it is set by that employer: Kenvue's 2027 R&D internship asks for a 3.0 cumulative GPA.15

  • Check location and work authorization

Many internships sit at headquarters, such as Smucker's in Orrville, Ohio and Nike's in Beaverton, Oregon, and several employers offer housing. Mondelēz and Kenvue's R&D internship require US work authorization without sponsorship.11,17,16,13,15

Strategy and common mistakes

Strategy

  • Be ready before classes start

Large employers post from mid-August through September and some close in October, so have a résumé ready before the fall term begins.11,14,23

  • Treat the interview as two-way

P&G calls the interview a two-way street and suggests preparing questions that tell you whether the role fits your goals.9

  • Apply where you fit, across teams

Nike welcomes applications to several roles that match a candidate's goals and experience.17

  • Apply directly

Smucker says it considers applicants from all schools, so apply even if a company does not hold events at your school.11

Common mistakes

  • Assuming brand roles take undergraduates

Some companies reserve brand management for MBA students. Check which functions take undergraduates before you apply.13

  • Waiting for spring

Most large consumer goods companies open in late summer or early fall and interview into winter. The Coca-Cola Company's first-quarter window is the exception.14,13,18

  • Holding offers you won't take

Career offices ask students to release offers they do not plan to accept right away, so the place can go to someone else.24

Your plan by class year

  1. First-year

Formal internships rarely take first-years. P&G runs student programs for those not yet ready for an internship, and details vary by program.3

Competitions are another way in: L'Oréal counts its Brandstorm innovation competition among the experiences its trainees had before joining.12

    What to do this year

    • Look for the few programs that take first-years

Earlier editions of P&G's Standout program took first-years in R&D alongside sophomores. Applications for the next one open in January 2027, so check its eligibility when they do.7,8

    • Get experience close to the shelf

BLS notes that marketing managers typically come up through related work such as sales or market research, so a part-time retail or sales job counts as early experience.19

    • Ask a smaller local brand for project work

A local food, beauty or household brand may take on a student for a defined project, such as a competitor survey or a social media plan, when asked directly. A short note that names the project is a reasonable start.

  2. Sophomore

Look for early-identification programs. P&G's Standout Emerging Leaders is a three-day program at its Cincinnati headquarters in the first week of August, ending in a final interview, and some attendees receive an internship offer for the following summer. Earlier editions were for sophomores, and first-years in R&D; applications for the next one open in January 2027.7,8

Build the examples that junior-year interviews ask for. P&G says entry-level candidates can draw on school and personal experience, and career offices advise watching employers' sites from July.9,23

    What to do this year

    • Apply to P&G's Standout program

Choose the commercial track (brand, sales, finance or HR) or the technical track (R&D, IT or product supply). Selection runs through assessments and an initial interview before invitations go out.8

    • Lead something you can describe

P&G looks for achievement-oriented people with demonstrated leadership, and says entry-level candidates can draw on school and personal experience. A club role or a project with a result gives you that story.4,9

    • Find summer work outside the big programs

Large programs such as Mondelēz's take undergraduate interns in their junior year, so for the summer after sophomore year, a smaller brand, a distributor or a retailer is a practical place to get experience.13

  3. Junior

The fall of junior year is the main window. Mondelēz takes undergraduate interns in their junior year, opens applications in early September and interviews on a rolling basis through February. L'Oréal's internship is for rising seniors, with applications typically opening in September.13,12

Windows can be short. Estée Lauder's 2027 internship program opens in September 2026 and closes in October 2026, PepsiCo's summer 2026 window ran from August 25 to October 31, 2025, and Smucker posts in mid-August and recruits in September and October. Some run later: Nike posts US internships between September and January, and The Coca-Cola Company lists its internship applications in the first quarter.14,10,11,17,18

    What to do this year

    • Apply in the first weeks of the fall

Mondelēz opens applications in early September, and Estée Lauder's 2027 program closes in October 2026. Have a résumé ready before the term starts.13,14

    • Keep a list of the later windows

Nike posts US internships between September and January, and The Coca-Cola Company lists its internship applications in the first quarter, so a quiet fall leaves time.17,18

    • Treat this summer's internship as your interview

P&G says 70 to 80% of its US interns receive full-time offers, and Mondelēz evaluates every intern on performance before deciding on an offer.1,13

  4. Senior and new grad

With so many graduates hired from intern classes, the fall of senior year is the time to look for entry-level programs that hire directly. L'Oréal's management trainee programs, for example, are full-time roles in marketing, finance, sales, IT, research and innovation, and operations.1,10,12

Know the rules on offers. One business school's employer guidelines require offers to stay open for at least two weeks, and treat reneging on an accepted offer as a serious breach.24

    What to do this year

    • Decide on a return offer with time to compare

Offers under one business school's guidelines stay open for at least two weeks. Use that time, and release any offer you do not plan to accept so the place can go to someone else.24

    • Apply to entry-level programs that hire directly

P&G hires undergraduates directly as brand managers, with a posting for 2027 graduates, and L'Oréal's management trainee programs hire into marketing, finance, sales, IT, research and operations.6,12

    • Bring your summer results to every interview

P&G advises showing your impact with numbers and results, so state what changed because of your internship project, and by how much.9
