How finance recruiting works

Most entry-level hiring in finance runs through a structured summer internship, often called a summer analyst program, and for many firms the internship is the main route into a full-time analyst role. Fortune reports that a majority of Goldman Sachs's summer interns are typically hired as full-time analysts, and JPMorganChase says its top-performing interns may receive offers to return.28,14

For investment banking in particular, the internship after junior year is close to a requirement: career offices say many banks treat it as one before making a full-time offer.4

The process usually runs in three steps. You apply online, often into rolling review, so a bank can read an application and invite you to interview at any point. A first round follows, frequently a recorded video interview or an online assessment. The final round is a superday: several short interviews back to back, often at the firm's office.15,19,8,3

Before the internship itself there are shorter programs for first- and second-year students: early-insight days, diversity programs and sophomore fellowships. JPMorganChase, for example, runs pre-internship programs for freshmen, sophomores and juniors that last from a day to a few weeks.8,6,16

The main roles

Investment banking

Advise companies on raising money, mergers and acquisitions, and connect them with investors.27

Banks organize the work into product groups, such as M&A, equity and debt capital markets, leveraged finance and restructuring, and into industry coverage groups. Large global banks, regional banks and boutique advisory firms all hire for these roles.7

It is the most competitive path in finance recruiting, and it starts the earliest. Fortune reported more than 360,000 applications to Goldman Sachs's 2025 summer internship.11,28

Private equity is usually a second step rather than a first job. Career offices describe private-equity analyst and associate roles as typically following investment banking, and Fortune has reported private-equity firms recruiting first-year bankers for jobs that start about two years later.11,33

Sales and trading, and trading firms

Buy and sell securities for clients or for the firm, in fast markets, with heavy use of numbers.11,27

At a bank this is the markets division. JPMorganChase says markets interns may work on mathematical models and data analysis for clients, and lists programming experience in languages such as Python or C++ as a plus.14

Proprietary and quantitative trading firms run their own internships and their own interviews, which lean on probability, problem solving and sometimes coding rather than finance knowledge. Jane Street says its trading interviews do not require any previous knowledge of finance, and SIG uses puzzles and strategy games to teach probability and expected value.23,25

Trading firms also run short programs for younger students. Optiver lists ten-week summer internships, including in quantitative trading, alongside programs of a few days.26

Asset and investment management

Manage money for institutions and individuals: research, portfolio management and client work.

Hiring can be split by function, each on its own calendar. BlackRock, for example, opens its investments internship applications in January, client, product and corporate roles in March, and technology in July, and reviews all of them on a rolling basis.20

Career offices list large asset managers among the firms that recruit in the fall, later than investment banks do.7,5

Corporate finance

Run the finances of a company outside the financial sector: planning and analysis, treasury, corporate development and investor relations.7

Every large company has a finance function, and many run rotational programs for new graduates. Microsoft's finance rotation program is two years of four six-month rotations, and Johnson & Johnson's ten-week finance internship feeds a rotational early-career program.21,22

These roles tend to recruit later than banking, often in the fall of junior year for a junior-year summer.5,6

Wealth management

Advise individuals and families on investments, lending and planning.18

Private banks run summer internships too. JPMorganChase's private bank internship covers investments, lending, banking, and trust and estate planning, and top interns may receive full-time offers.18

You do not need a securities license before you start. Most licenses require a firm to sponsor you, so employers do not expect new hires to hold them.27

What matters and how to prepare

  • A one-page résumé

For nearly every student, a finance résumé is one side of one page. Keep a longer master version and cut from it for each application.12

  • The technical basics

Banking interviews test accounting, the three financial statements, and valuation methods such as discounted cash flow, and sometimes leveraged buyouts. Excel and financial modeling come up as well.3,9

  • Behavioral answers

Expect questions about setbacks and decisions. Fortune reported Goldman Sachs interviewers asking candidates to describe a failure and what they did about it.29

  • Recorded video interviews

Many first rounds are recorded video interviews. BlackRock's, for example, allows up to three minutes per question and must be completed within five days of applying, so practice answering on camera before you apply.8,20

  • Networking that informs

Career offices recommend informational conversations with alumni and junior employees, and note that first- and second-year analysts can carry real weight in hiring. Go to firm events, too: banks may hold them before applications open.5,3,1

  • Opinions about markets

Follow the markets closely enough to hold a view and explain it. Career offices pass on recruiter advice to show the ability to have opinions about markets.4

Strategy and common mistakes

Strategy

  • Apply as soon as applications open

Under rolling review, interviews can begin before the deadline. Bank of America says so directly, and career offices advise submitting as soon as a program opens.19,10

  • Choose your applications

Some banks limit how widely you can apply. JPMorganChase recommends no more than three summer internship applications, and Bank of America allows one office and one division per year.15,19

  • Prepare before the invitation arrives

Career offices suggest starting interview preparation two to three months before interviews, and not waiting for an invitation to begin.8,10

  • For trading firms, practice probability

Jane Street publishes a guide to the probability and markets concepts its interviews draw on, and advises using the programming language you know best rather than learning a new one for the interview.24

Common mistakes

  • Treating the deadline as the date to apply

With rolling review, a spot can be filled well before the posted deadline. Track every rolling deadline and submit early.19,9

  • Measuring yourself against a friend's timeline

Career offices warn against comparing timelines with peers. One career director told an alumni magazine that early timelines create “a false urgency” and narrow students' options.9,13

  • Assuming one calendar fits all of finance

Investment banking recruits during sophomore year for a junior-year summer; much of the rest of finance recruits in the fall of junior year. Missing the first does not close the second.1,5

Your plan by class year

  1. First-year

Use the first year to explore and to find the early programs. Many firms run early-insight and diversity programs aimed at first-years and sometimes early sophomores, and some of them give participants priority for later internships.6,8

Applications for many early-insight programs come out in the summer before sophomore year and continue into the fall.1

    What to do this year

    • Apply to programs built for first-years

Some programs take only first-years, or first-years and sophomores. One career-center list of them includes programs at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citadel, Vanguard and Barclays, and JPMorganChase runs pre-internship events for freshmen, sophomores and juniors that last from a day to a few weeks.30,16

    • Look at programs run by nonprofits

Girls Who Invest takes first-years and sophomores into its scholars program, with a final deadline in mid-October; first-years follow its online track, and sophomores can also ask to be considered for its internship track. MLT Ascend coaches low-income and first-generation students from their first year, and its application opens in November.31,32

    • Ask a smaller local firm for real work

A wealth management office, a regional bank, an accounting practice or a small investment firm near home may take a student for the summer, or for a few hours a week, if you ask directly. Work like that gives you something concrete to talk about in the sophomore-year interviews that matter most for banking.

    • Join a finance club and start the basics

A student investment or finance club is the easiest place to start on the technical basics described above: accounting, the three statements and valuation. Go to firm events, too, since banks may hold them before applications open.1

  2. Sophomore

This is the year that decides most investment banking internships for the summer after junior year. Career offices put the start of bank recruiting about a year and a half before the internship. Large banks begin opening applications by January of sophomore year, and some boutique banks open in the fall before that.1,3,2

Interviews then roll through the spring and summer, and Fortune describes candidates typically applying in sophomore year for an internship between junior and senior year.4,28

There are also programs built for sophomores themselves, such as JPMorganChase's paid five-week summer fellowship.17

    What to do this year

    • Be ready for banking by the winter

If you want investment banking at a large bank, have your résumé, technical preparation and outreach in place before January: that is when large banks begin opening applications for the summer after junior year.1,3,2

    • Apply to sophomore programs

Many firms run programs only for sophomores. One career-center list includes Citi's Early ID program, Wells Fargo's Sophomore Discovery Fellowship, SMBC's sophomore program and JPMorganChase's fellowship, alongside insight days at banks such as Jefferies and Houlihan Lokey.30,17

    • Keep building experience close to home

If a large-bank internship does not come through this year, a summer at a smaller local firm still counts. Much of the rest of finance recruits in the fall of junior year, and that experience is what those interviews will ask about.5

  3. Junior

If you are a junior reading this in the fall and want investment banking at a large bank, most of that recruiting for your summer took place during sophomore year. The rest of finance runs later: career offices say non-banking finance firms, including corporate finance, asset and wealth management and commercial banking, recruit mostly in the fall of junior year, with applications in August, September and early October.4,5,6,7

Calendars differ firm by firm, even inside one company, so check each firm's student page rather than assuming one season.20

    What to do this year

    • Apply in the fall for this summer

Corporate finance, asset and wealth management and commercial banking recruit mostly now, with applications in August, September and early October. Apply as each program opens, since many review on a rolling basis.5,6,19

    • Treat the internship as the interview

This summer is where most full-time offers in finance come from. Fortune reports that a majority of Goldman Sachs's summer interns are typically hired as analysts, and JPMorganChase says top-performing interns may receive offers to return.28,14

    • If banking passed you by, keep looking

Large banks mostly chose this summer's interns during sophomore year. Keep checking each firm's own student page, since calendars differ even inside one firm, and put the parts of finance that recruit now at the top of your list.1,20

  4. Senior and new grad

At banks, the full-time offer usually comes out of the internship: career offices describe the junior-year internship as a requirement at many banks, and Fortune reports that a majority of Goldman Sachs's summer interns are typically hired as analysts. Some firms also run a full-time cycle in the fall. BlackRock opens its full-time analyst applications in July and reviews them on a rolling basis from September to December.4,28,20

Corporate finance programs can run longer windows. Microsoft takes applications to its finance rotation program throughout the academic year, from September to April.21

    What to do this year

    • Turn the internship into an offer

At many banks the full-time offer comes out of the junior-year internship, so a return offer is the usual route in. If you have one, weigh it before you start applying elsewhere.4

    • Apply to full-time programs in the fall

Without an offer, look for firms that run a full-time cycle. BlackRock reviews full-time analyst applications on a rolling basis from September to December, and Microsoft takes finance rotation applications from September to April.20,21

Read the chart as a picture of what is still open, not of when the season began. Sources put large-bank investment banking recruiting for a junior-year summer in sophomore year, about a year and a half ahead, so most of those programs had already chosen their interns before this chart's months began.1,3

What the chart can show is the part of finance that recruits in the fall, which career offices say includes corporate finance, asset and wealth management and commercial banking. Both pictures are true at once: banking starts earlier than this catalog shows.5,7
