How energy and sustainability recruiting works

Internships are the main route into full-time energy jobs. NextEra Energy regards every intern as a potential full-time employee, ExxonMobil gives high-performing interns priority for return internships and its early-career program, and Dominion Energy says it offered full-time jobs to 87% of its graduating senior interns in 2023.11,2,8

The large employers recruit in the fall. Chevron recruits mostly between September and November through career fairs, information sessions and student organizations, and NextEra posts internships from September to November for the following summer, aiming to fill them by the end of December.1,11

The rest of the field runs later. Career offices describe energy recruiting as later than most industries, with many postings from late December into January and some through April and May, and say renewables development, finance and markets roles keep appearing through winter and spring.30,31

Processes are thorough. bp's internship application runs through a questionnaire and CV, online assessments, an on-demand video interview, a technical interview and an assessment center, and Chevron's managers use behavioral questions about how you handled past situations.5,1

The main roles

Power and electrical engineering

Design and run the systems that generate and deliver electricity.24

Utilities hire engineers across the whole grid. Duke Energy's summer 2027 engineering internship spans transmission, distribution, environmental health and safety, generation, project management and construction, natural gas and nuclear, and lists tools such as CAD, MATLAB and power-flow software.7

New graduates can join rotational programs. PG&E runs an 18-month gas rotation for civil and mechanical engineers and a 12-month electric rotation for electrical engineers, open to graduates within two years of their degree.12

Oil, gas and petroleum engineering

Find and produce oil and gas, much of it at field sites.23

BLS notes that petroleum engineers work in offices and at drilling sites and may travel offshore or abroad for long periods. Field engineering at service companies such as Halliburton involves physical work in all climates, on-call shifts and nights in the field.23,6

ExxonMobil's internships run about three months in summer and its co-ops about four months in fall or spring. Its early-career program for new graduates moves hires through several assignments, at one site or several.2,3

Renewables and clean energy

Develop, build and operate wind, solar and other clean-energy projects.

Clean-energy companies hire beyond engineering. Ørsted's Americas internship runs from June to August and takes engineering, sustainability and business students into project development, safety and quality, finance, commercial work, project execution and asset management.16

Equipment makers run rotational programs: GE Vernova's wind engineering development program for 2027 is two years of four six-month rotations, sometimes at different sites.15

Environmental science and engineering

Assess and protect air, water and land, often at a consulting firm.26

Environmental engineers usually hold a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering or a related field such as chemical or civil engineering. BLS notes that environmental scientists benefit from internships, that many work at consulting firms, and that fieldwork can be physically demanding.25,26

Consultancies hire widely. ERM's entry-level roles include environmental scientists and engineers, climate and sustainability analysts, GIS and data specialists, and energy and carbon analysts, and Burns & McDonnell takes interns from first-year students through graduate students.19,17

Energy trading and business

Trade power and fuel, and run the business side of energy companies.

Energy companies hire business students too. Constellation's 2027 trading internship is for finance, business, economics and energy business majors and runs about ten weeks in the summer, and PG&E posts business internships from January through March.14,12

What matters and how to prepare

  • Plan for the FE exam

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam is the first step toward a PE license and is designed for students close to graduating. Engineering departments recommend taking it in the final semester of senior year.27,28

  • Check work authorization early

Many energy employers state that they do not sponsor visas for these roles, including Duke Energy, Dominion Energy, Entergy and Constellation on their 2027 postings.7,9,13,14

  • Be ready for field conditions

Utility internships can require protective equipment and a valid driver's license, and Entergy expects availability during storms, outages and emergencies.7,13

  • Expect to move

Development programs often rotate between sites: GE Vernova's engineering program and ExxonMobil's early-career program can both span several locations.15,3

  • Know each employer's GPA rule

Minimums vary by employer. Shell states a 3.2 minimum for its 2027 internship, NextEra asks for 3.0 or higher, and Duke Energy sets a 2.75 minimum with 3.0 preferred.4,11,7

Strategy and common mistakes

Strategy

  • Apply in the fall at the large employers

NextEra aims to fill its internships by the end of December, so a fall application is what reaches the large utilities and energy companies.11

  • Keep searching after the fall

A quiet fall does not mean the season is over. As one career office puts it, don't confuse “I haven't found it yet” with “I missed it.”31

  • Join a professional society chapter

Petroleum engineering departments point students to chapters of societies such as SPE, where company recruiters attend meetings and events.29

  • Answer with specifics

Chevron advises keeping interview answers specific and results-oriented, and Burns & McDonnell suggests sharing specific examples of your experiences and accomplishments.1,18

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every energy employer recruits early

Career offices note that relatively few energy companies attend the big early-fall events, so many openings appear later in the year.30

  • Missing an early fall deadline

The fall window can close quickly: Duke Energy's summer 2027 engineering internship asked for applications by October 16, 2026.7

  • Overlooking the field conditions

Field and petroleum roles can mean long travel, remote sites, nights and on-call shifts. Know what a role involves before you accept it.23,6

Your plan by class year

  1. First-year

National labs are an early door. The Department of Energy's SULI internships need only 12 undergraduate credit hours, 6 of them in STEM, and summer 2027 applications run from October 14, 2026 to January 6, 2027.20

Engineering consultancies hire early too: Burns & McDonnell takes interns starting from the first year.17

    What to do this year

    • Apply to SULI once your first grades post

SULI asks for at least one completed semester, with 12 credit hours, 6 of them in STEM, showing on your transcript by the deadline. Credits earned in high school, including AP, do not count, so a first-year whose fall grades post before January 6, 2027 can apply for summer 2027.21,20

    • Ask engineering firms and smaller companies directly

Burns & McDonnell takes interns from freshmen through graduate students, and career offices note that smaller energy companies often hire when they actually need someone. A direct note to a local engineering firm, utility or clean-energy company can find work outside the fall recruiting calendar.17,31

    • Look at undergraduate research sites

NSF's undergraduate research sites (REUs) include engineering and earth and environmental science, pay participants, and usually set deadlines between January and March. They are open to undergraduates who are US citizens, nationals or permanent residents, and each site chooses its own students.22

  2. Sophomore

Co-ops reward an early start. Southern Company's power-generation co-ops ask for three alternating semesters with the same team.10

Some corporate programs prefer older students, so check the class year on each posting: Entergy's summer 2027 substation design internship prefers rising juniors and seniors.13

    What to do this year

    • Apply to utility programs open to sophomores

Some large employers set no class-year minimum. Duke Energy's summer 2027 engineering internship asks for an engineering major, a 2.75 GPA and a graduation date no earlier than August 2027, with applications due October 16, 2026, and NextEra takes any full-time bachelor's student with a 3.0 GPA.7,11

    • Follow up with smaller companies in the spring

Smaller developers and startups may hire as their needs become clear later in the year, and career offices advise networking with alumni and following the employers you like through the winter. Check back with the companies you wrote to in the fall.30,31

  3. Junior

The main window runs from late summer through fall. Shell's US internship posting for 2027 opened on August 21, 2026, Duke Energy asked for summer 2027 engineering applications by October 16, 2026, and NextEra posts from September to November.4,7,11

Then a second wave. One career office's timeline puts energy and sustainability internships from September to November and again from January to April, with most posted in early spring.32

    What to do this year

    • Apply before the fall deadlines

The large employers close early: Duke Energy's summer 2027 engineering applications are due October 16, 2026, and NextEra aims to fill its internships by the end of December.7,11

    • Plan a second round in the spring

Renewables development, finance and markets roles keep appearing through winter and spring, so plan another round of applications after the new year.31

    • Treat this summer's internship as your interview

Burns & McDonnell describes an internship there as a lengthy job interview, and NextEra regards every intern as a potential full-time employee.17,11

  4. Senior and new grad

Rotational programs open in late summer and fall: GE Vernova's wind engineering development program for 2027 was posted on August 31, 2026, and PG&E's rotations take graduates within two years of their degree.15,12

Full-time hiring runs from September into March, according to one career office's timeline, and employers such as Dominion Energy fill many full-time roles from their own interns.32,8

    What to do this year

    • Ask your internship employer about returning

If you interned, start with that employer: ExxonMobil gives high-performing interns priority for its early-career program, and NextEra may offer interns the chance to return.2,11

    • Apply to rotational programs as they open

Development programs post from late summer into the fall, so look for them as the school year starts. Some stay open after graduation too: PG&E's rotations take graduates within two years of their degree.15,12

    • Sit the FE exam before you graduate

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam is designed for students close to graduating, and engineering departments recommend taking it in your final semester.27,28
