How retail and e-commerce recruiting works

Retailers hire students on two tracks. Corporate internships cover areas such as buying, inventory, marketing and finance, while store and distribution-center internships preview a management job. Target lists both kinds, from Associate Buyer and Inventory Analyst to Store Executive and Operations Manager.1

Internships feed full-time hiring. Walmart says its development program can be reached by interning a year before graduation or by applying after graduating, and Wayfair says it evaluates interns with the goal of offering them full-time jobs after graduation.5,14

Full-time entry programs are structured. Gap Inc.'s Rotational Management Program runs 18 months through product, merchandising, planning, inventory and pricing, and Macy's Executive Development Program in buying offers start dates through the year.11,16

Not all hiring follows the campus calendar. Career offices note that many fashion, retail and beauty companies also hire as needed throughout the year.26

The main roles

Buying and merchandising

Choose what the business sells, from which suppliers, and on what terms.17

Retail buyers purchase goods for resale. BLS notes that they judge suppliers on price, quality, availability and reliability, negotiate contracts, and typically need a bachelor's degree and a few months of on-the-job training.17

Internships preview the job. Target's Associate Buyer interns carry one project from start to finish and present the results to leadership, and Walmart's merchandising internship is an 11-week summer at its home office in Bentonville, Arkansas, with housing offered to students from farther away.3,6

Planning and analytics

Decide how much inventory to buy, where it goes, and what customers want next.26,19

Typical entry titles include merchandise planner, allocation analyst and supply chain analyst, and Target's internships include an Inventory Analyst track.26,1

Market research analysts, a related role, study consumer preferences and business conditions to judge what will sell. BLS notes that they typically need a bachelor's degree.19

Store leadership

Run a store's teams, sales floor and operations.

Store internships are full-time summer jobs. Target's Store Executive Intern is a paid, 40-hour-a-week program that previews its Executive Team Leader role, an assistant store manager, and Target prefers but does not require prior retail experience.2

Some programs lead straight to a management job. Nordstrom's Retail Leadership Training Program runs eight weeks and places those who finish into an assistant department manager role at a store in their area.9

Supply chain and operations

Move goods from suppliers through distribution centers to stores and customers.18

Logisticians analyze and coordinate an organization's supply chain and typically need a bachelor's degree. BLS projects their employment to grow 18% from 2025 to 2035.18

Operations internships put students in charge of people. Amazon's Area Manager intern spends 10 weeks in an operations building coaching a team of associates, and Amazon runs Pathways, a three-year operations leadership program, for graduates.7,8

E-commerce and corporate functions

Marketing, e-commerce, finance and technology at a retailer's headquarters.1

Retailers hire for the same corporate functions as other large companies: Target's internships include marketing and financial analysis, and career offices list e-commerce coordinator among typical entry titles.1,26

Online retailers run their own programs and calendars. Wayfair's summer internship is for rising seniors, and Chewy's intern and co-op applications typically open in early January.13,15

What matters and how to prepare

  • Excel and data

Buying and planning run on spreadsheets: Macy's Executive Development Program asks for advanced Excel, including PivotTables and lookups, and career offices list Excel and data analysis among the skills retailers seek.16,26

  • Leadership you can point to

Operations internships ask for leadership experience in school or activities, and store programs look for a real interest in managing people.4,2

  • Read the schedule

Store and distribution roles state their hours. Target asks for flexibility including nights, weekends and holidays, and Amazon's Area Manager interns work shifts that can include nights, weekends or holidays and last up to 12 hours.2,4,7

  • Know each program's GPA rule

Where a program states one, it is set by that employer: Macy's Executive Development Program lists a 3.0 GPA as preferred, and considers all majors.16

  • Know the interview steps

Employers describe their process: Chewy uses one or two screening rounds before behavioral or technical finals, Wayfair a recruiter screen, a first round and a final round, and URBN a self-recorded video interview.15,13,10

  • Know the business

TJX says it looks for leadership, problem-solving and creative thinking. Research each company before a career fair or interview, and follow up with a thank-you note.12,24

Strategy and common mistakes

Strategy

  • Apply when a posting opens

Rolling review means positions fill as the season goes on, and some windows last only a week, so check employers' pages from late summer.1,9

  • Pick one role per employer

URBN recommends applying for the one role that best suits your interests and skills.10

  • Use the winter events

Retail career fairs and showcases in January, such as NRF NXT, give a second round of interviews after the fall.20,24

  • Keep a plan for after graduation

Career offices suggest a post-graduation internship if a full-time offer does not come through, since many retailers also hire as needed through the year.26

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for spring

Most large retailers open summer internships in the fall, and some close within weeks. Chewy, which typically opens in January, is an exception.10,9,15

  • Applying a year early

Most corporate and store-leadership internships are for rising seniors, so check the graduation dates a posting asks for before applying.6,7,9

  • Skipping the schedule

Store and distribution roles include nights, weekends and holidays. Read the posting's schedule before you accept.2,7

Your plan by class year

  1. First-year

Few retail internships take first-years. University retail programs offer early exposure instead: one business school's retail workshop, run with employers including Walmart, TJX and Macy's, is open to first-year and sophomore students of any major.25

A store job counts. Career offices suggest working in retail for a brand you like, to show that you know its customers.26

    What to do this year

    • Take a store job

Part-time or seasonal work on a sales floor teaches you the customer and the operation. Target prefers, though it does not require, prior retail experience for its store leadership internship.2,26

    • Ask an advisor about Rising Retail Stars

The NRF Foundation's Rising Retail Stars Scholarship lets each member university nominate one freshman or sophomore to attend NRF NXT, with a travel stipend paid to the school. An advisor makes the nomination; for the 2027 event, nominations close October 30, 2026.22

    • Go to a retail career event

NRF NXT is open to any undergraduate at a US college, first-years included, and its career fair brings recruiters from many retailers. Registration for the January 2027 event in New York closes December 19, 2026.21

    • Offer to help a local shop

An independent store or small online brand may have no internship program at all, so ask the owner directly whether you can help with inventory counts, a sales report or social posts. That work gives you real numbers to talk about in an interview.

  2. Sophomore

Look for short early-identification programs. Wayfair's Early Leaders Program is a week-long experience for second-year students from diverse communities.13

Retail workshops and showcases run with employers are usually open to sophomores too. One university retail center holds showcases in September and January where companies can preselect students for interviews.25,24

    What to do this year

    • Apply to sophomore programs

Some retailers run short events for sophomores that lead into the next year's internship recruiting. A&F Co.'s Corporate Sophomore Summit, in its 2026 cycle a three-day virtual event in late May for sophomores with at least a 3.0 GPA, started recruiting for its 2027 summer internships. Wayfair's Early Leaders Program, above, is another.23,13

    • Turn a store job into responsibility

Operations internships ask for leadership experience, and store programs look for a real interest in managing people. Ask to train new hires, run a section or close the store, so you have examples to point to.4,2

    • Plan for next fall's applications

Most corporate and store-leadership internships are for rising seniors and open in the fall. Walmart's summer 2027 merchandising internship, for example, asked for graduation between December 2027 and May 2028, so note the windows of the retailers you want now.6,10

  3. Junior

The fall of junior year is the main internship window, because most corporate and store-leadership internships are for rising seniors. Walmart's summer 2027 merchandising internship asks for graduation between December 2027 and May 2028, and Amazon's Area Manager internship between December 2027 and August 2028.6,7,9

Windows vary in length. For summer 2027, URBN took applications from September 14 to October 30, 2026, Nordstrom opened its 10-week corporate internship for one week, October 12 to 18, and Target reviews applications on a rolling basis until positions fill. Chewy is later, typically opening in early January.10,9,1,15

    What to do this year

    • Apply in the first weeks a posting opens

Target reviews applications on a rolling basis, and Nordstrom's corporate window is open for a single week. Check the pages of the retailers you want from late summer and apply as soon as a posting opens.1,9

    • Pick a track

Decide between a corporate internship, such as buying or inventory analysis, and a store or distribution-center internship that previews a management job. URBN recommends applying for the one role that best suits your interests.1,10

    • Rehearse each employer's interview format

Formats differ: URBN uses a self-recorded video interview, Wayfair a recruiter screen followed by two rounds, and Chewy behavioral or technical finals after one or two screens.10,13,15

  4. Senior and new grad

Full-time programs open in the fall of senior year. Macy's began recruiting for its 2027 Executive Development Program in buying on September 18, 2026, with the posting open until April 1, 2027. Chewy advises new graduates to apply one to two months before graduating.16,15

January brings a second chance. NRF NXT, the National Retail Federation Foundation's student event in New York City on January 7 to 10, 2027, includes a career fair with recruiters from more than 30 retailers, followed by invitation-only interviews on site.20

    What to do this year

    • Treat this summer's internship as your interview

Wayfair says it evaluates interns with the goal of offering them full-time jobs, and Walmart's development program can be reached by interning a year before graduation. Ask your manager near the end of the summer what a return offer depends on.14,5

    • Apply to development programs in the fall

Without a return offer, apply to full-time programs such as Macy's Executive Development Program or Gap Inc.'s Rotational Management Program as they open in the fall.16,11

    • Consider a store leadership program

Nordstrom's Retail Leadership Training Program places those who finish into an assistant department manager role at a store in their area, a direct route into management.9
