How education recruiting works

Most education hiring follows the school year: districts hire teachers in the spring and summer before school starts, while teaching fellowships and corps programs take applications from fall to spring. This guide covers the main roles, how to prepare, a plan for each class year, and what Upwind's catalog shows right now.24,1,8,12

How education recruiting works

Every state requires public school teachers to be licensed. BLS lists the usual requirements: a bachelor's degree, a student-teaching program, a background check, and a general teaching test plus a test in the subject you will teach.20

Districts hire for the next school year in the spring and summer. In Massachusetts the busiest hiring period typically runs from April through August, and large districts hire later because internal candidates can request transfers first. New York City's public schools open their teacher application for the 2027-28 school year in January.24,1

There is more than one route into a classroom. Every state offers an alternative route for people who already hold a bachelor's degree, and Texas lets some alternative-certification candidates teach as paid interns while they finish. Teacher residencies pair a candidate with a mentor teacher for a full year of coursework, usually with a stipend and a multiyear commitment to the district.20,26,15

Corps and fellowship programs recruit on fixed deadlines. Teach For America takes applications for its 2027 corps through four deadlines, from September 11, 2026 to March 8, 2027, and fills its regions first come, first served.8

The main roles

Classroom teaching

Teach a grade level or subject in a public, charter or private school.

Elementary teachers usually major in elementary education, and many states require high school teachers to major in the subject they teach, such as mathematics or science.19,20

Special education teachers adapt lessons for students with disabilities and write each student's individualized education program. BLS notes that every state offers an alternative route to certification for people who already hold a bachelor's degree.21

Teaching corps and fellowships

Teach while you train, through a program that places and supports you.

Teach For America asks for a bachelor's degree by the first day of training and a GPA of at least 2.5, which it says its partner districts require. NYC Teaching Fellows is for graduates whose degree is in a field other than education; fellows earn a teacher's salary while completing a subsidized master's, typically in two to three years.9,2

Charter networks run their own pipelines. KIPP NYC was already taking applications for the 2027-28 school year in October 2026, and runs an associate teacher program for recent graduates.6

School counseling

Help students with academic plans, careers and personal concerns.22

Nearly all states require school counselors to hold a master's degree in school counseling or a related field, with a supervised internship or practicum, and some employers prefer classroom teaching experience. Licensure often also requires a state or national test such as the Praxis.22,17

Higher education administration

Run admissions, student affairs and other offices at colleges.23

College administrators typically need a master's degree, but BLS notes some openings for those with a bachelor's, and says admissions and student affairs roles may not require prior experience. Some administrators build experience in college as resident assistants or in the registrar's office.23

Graduate assistantships in offices such as residence life and career services pay a stipend and tuition while a student completes a master's. The Placement Exchange, run by NASPA and ACUHO-I, held its 2026 placement for student affairs roles in February.28,18

Education technology and research

Build learning products, or study what works in schools.

Edtech companies hire like tech companies. Khan Academy's 10 to 12 week remote software engineering internship is for rising juniors and seniors in computer science or related fields, with applications typically opening in October.7

Policy research organizations hire recent graduates too. MDRC offers paid internships to undergraduates and master's students from groups underrepresented in education and social policy research.14

What matters and how to prepare

  • Know your state's license

Requirements are set by each state. Texas, for example, lists a bachelor's degree, an approved educator preparation program, certification exams, a state application and fingerprinting, and Praxis requirements also differ by state.25,16

  • A sample lesson

Expect to teach one. Teach For America's interview includes a five-minute sample lesson and a case study, and New York City schools may ask for a demo lesson.9,1

  • Records and references

Applications ask for documents that take time to gather. Houston ISD's alternative certification program asks for transcripts from every college attended, a résumé and three references, and requires a background check.5

  • Know each program's GPA rule

Where a program states one, it is set by that program: Teach For America and NYC Teaching Fellows each ask for at least a 2.5, and the Ignite Fellowship a 3.0 high school GPA for first-years.9,2,11

  • Time with students

Some school counseling employers prefer or require classroom teaching experience. Tutoring and summer teaching fellowships are ways to get time with students before you graduate.22,11,12

Strategy and common mistakes

Strategy

  • Apply early to programs

Teach For America fills regions first come, first served, and NYC Teaching Fellows says early applicants have the best chance at their preferred subject.8,2

  • Follow each district's process

Some large districts require an application with their HR office before you contact a principal about a posting, and many start with a screening interview, often by phone.24

  • Keep applying through the summer

Districts keep hiring until students arrive, and some teachers are hired days or weeks after school begins.29,4

Common mistakes

  • Looking for next year's jobs in the fall

District teaching jobs for the next school year mostly open in winter and spring, so a fall search turns up mid-year openings instead.1,24

  • Missing a program's early deadline

Corps and fellowship programs fill regions and subjects as they go, so a later application has fewer choices.8,2

  • Skipping the district application

Where a district requires an HR application first, contacting a principal directly can skip a required step.24

Your plan by class year

  1. First-year

Paid tutoring is open from the first year. Teach For America's Ignite Fellowship is a part-time, virtual tutoring role of up to five hours a week for 14 weeks; first-years qualify with a 3.0 high school GPA, and the spring 2027 cohort takes applications from September 2 to November 18, 2026.11

Colleges must spend part of their Federal Work-Study funds on community service jobs, including reading tutors for children, so ask your financial aid office about tutoring positions.27

    What to do this year

    • Apply to tutor this semester

Ignite takes first-years, and its spring 2027 applications close November 18, 2026. If you qualify for Federal Work-Study, ask your financial aid office about paid tutoring positions as well.11,27

    • Volunteer in a preschool classroom

Jumpstart Kids places volunteers, college students among them, in local preschools for at least four hours a week, working with the same small group of children for a semester after live training in early childhood development.13

    • Ask local programs for summer work

Day camps, libraries, after-school programs and tutoring centers near you may never post on a national job board, so ask their directors directly about summer work. Choose roles where you lead a group of children.

  2. Sophomore

Summer teaching fellowships take any undergraduate. Breakthrough Collaborative's nine-week summer fellowship is open to all majors with no education coursework required; its 2027 application opens October 8, 2026, with deadlines on January 14 and February 25, 2027.12

If you plan to teach in a public school, learn your state's licensure tests early: Praxis requirements differ by state.16

    What to do this year

    • Apply to Breakthrough by the early deadline

Breakthrough's 2027 application opens October 8, 2026. The early deadline is January 14, 2027, and you rank your top locations when you apply.12

    • Build toward an early corps application

A semester of Ignite or Breakthrough, or a semester as a Teach For America campus ambassador, makes you eligible to apply early to the corps as a junior.10

    • Check your state's licensure path

Requirements are set by each state. If you may teach in a public school, confirm now whether your major and courses lead to an approved preparation program, or whether you would use an alternative route after graduating.25,20

  3. Junior

Student teaching is arranged a semester or more ahead. Chicago Public Schools takes registrations for winter and spring 2027 student teaching from September 22 to October 16, 2026, and offers some student teachers early job-offer opportunities.3

Juniors graduating between July 2027 and June 2028 who have taken part in Ignite, Breakthrough or a campus ambassador role can apply early to Teach For America's 2028 corps.10

    What to do this year

    • Arrange student teaching a semester ahead

Placements are arranged well ahead: Chicago Public Schools' registration for winter and spring 2027 student teaching runs to October 16, 2026. Ask your education program when your district's window opens.3

    • Apply early to Teach For America

If you have done Ignite, Breakthrough or a campus ambassador role, you can apply to the corps in your junior year instead of waiting for the senior-year deadlines.10

    • Try an edtech or research internship

Khan Academy's software engineering internship is for rising juniors and seniors and typically opens in October, and MDRC offers paid internships in education and social policy research.7,14

  4. Senior and new grad

Corps and fellowship programs run on fall-to-spring deadlines. After a first deadline of September 11, 2026, Teach For America's 2027 corps takes applications by October 26, 2026, February 1, 2027, and a critical-needs deadline of March 8, 2027.8

District jobs open later. Career offices suggest building a résumé and portfolio from August to October and watching postings from February, and hiring runs into the summer: Chicago Public Schools held teacher job fairs from April through August 2026, and the last two weeks before school starts are a busy time for last-minute hires.29,4

    What to do this year

    • Apply to corps and fellowships in the fall

Teach For America fills regions first come, first served, and NYC Teaching Fellows says early applicants have the best chance at their preferred subject, so apply at the first deadline you can meet.8,2

    • Compare residencies and charter pipelines

Teacher residencies pair you with a mentor teacher for a full year, usually with a stipend and a multiyear commitment, and charter networks such as KIPP NYC run associate teacher programs for recent graduates.15,6

    • Watch district postings from late winter

District jobs for the next school year open in winter and spring and keep opening through the summer. Where a district asks for an HR application first, file it before you contact a principal.1,24,4

What Upwind’s catalog shows

These figures come from a read of Upwind’s catalog on October 3, 2026. 7% of education listings state a deadline between October 2026 and March 2027; the rest don't state a deadline, say applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, or name a later date. Too few listings state a deadline in this window to chart them by month.

Career offices advise watching school district websites and state education department boards for teaching jobs, which open mostly in the spring for the next school year. Use them alongside this catalog.29,24

The catalog files colleges, school districts, education nonprofits and some university research offices together under this field, which is why several universities appear below as employers.
